Learn BSL for Free

We have received funding from Manchester Adult Education Service to deliver a programme of free BSL courses. These courses are all suitable for beginners. 

Eligibility Criteria

The funding criteria mean that to be eligible for a place you must be:

  • Aged 19 or over
  • A resident of Manchester (Home postcode: M1, M2, M3 (excluding Salford postcodes), M4, M8, M9, M10, M11, M12, M13, M14, M15, M16 (excluding Trafford postcodes), M18, M19, M20, M21, M22, M23, M40)

Please note:

if you are allocated a course place, we need to meet with you to complete an adult education enrolment form and to check your proof of address and ID before your place on the course is fully confirmed. 

U​pcoming courses

Title: 40 Hour BSL (102 and 103) 
Start Date: Thursday 16th January 2025
Time: 10am to 12pm
Duration: 2 hours weekly (over 20 weeks)
Location: Manchester Deaf Centre
Dates: January to July 2025

What Will I Learn? This 20-week course covers Units 102 and 103 of Signature’s Level 1 Award in British Sign Language (BSL). It is delivered in 2-hour sessions each week over a 20-week period, with a total of 36 hours of teaching with 4 hours are dedicated to catch-up and revision sessions, offering further support from our experienced and dedicated BSL tutors.

Throughout the course, you will learn essential BSL vocabulary and skills, as outlined in the Signature Level 1 Award curriculum.

Title: 10-Hour Basic British Sign Language 
Start Date: Friday 21st February 2025
Time: 10:30am to 12:30pm
Duration: 2 hours weekly (over 5 weeks)
Location: Manchester Deaf Centre, Crawford House, Booth St E, M13 9GH
Dates: 21/02, 28/08, 07/03, 14/03 and 21/03
Teacher: Wayne Sharples

Basic British Sign Language (10 hours): This course is purely for fun and our informal sessions will cover sign vocabulary related to everyday life, including:  family, friends, days of the week, numbers, meeting people and greetings. Great for people who are looking for a taster without committing to a fully accredited qualification.

What will I learn?

You will be learning about these topics: 

• Fingerspelling• Meeting and greeting• Numbers and money• Days, months and time• Family and friends

At the end of the course, we will test your knowledge of what you’ve learned in the previous 4 weeks and you will receive your certificate of completion!

 

Title: 24 Hour Introduction to BSL (101) 
Start Date: Tuesday 1st April 2025
Time: 11am to 1pm
Duration: 2 hours weekly (over 12 weeks)

What will I learn?: This short course covers Unit 101 from Signature’s Level 1 Award in British Sign Language.  The course is delivered 2 hours a week over a 12-week period, and this includes 20 hours’ teaching time with 4 hours reserved for catch-up and revision with the support of our amazing, experienced BSL teachers.  We will cover basic vocabulary in BSL, including meeting and greeting, numbers, weather, transport and directions.   

Successful completion of this unit will enable learners to enrol on to a 40-hour course so that they can complete the remaining units of the full Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language and take the full qualification exams. 

(Please note that whilst the course tuition is free, funded by the MAES and learners will be required to pay their own exam fees only which are charged by Signature. The current exam fees total £108 at the time of writing (these may be subject to a small increase in 2025).
